Beauty and the Origins of Electrophysiology, Telecommunications and the Global Theater

Presented by: ALAN MACY

A story that starts with beauty and weaves its definition with emotional feeling, taste, the galvanic cell, electrophysiology, and the telephone. Lambert’s, Hume’s and Sulzer’s ideas about taste, pleasure and beauty have contributed to the origins of psychophysiological thought, and to the origins of electrophysiology. Methods developed by Galvani and Volta establish basis for the fields of electrophysiology and electrical telecommunications.

Human nervous system extension was realized with the development of the telephone in 1876. Electricity moving inside the body could now directly mediate the flow of electricity outside the body, at an equivalent bit rate. At this transformative, technology-driven juncture, the body’s real-time nervous system components for speech and hearing were capable of being physically extended to great distances.

Real-time, human nervous system extension technologies became tightly synchronized with power generation and transmission abilities. Extremely rapid human population growth and energy consumption was coincident.

Learning Objectives:

o  Participants will be able to explain certain aspects autonomic nervous system behavior, such as sympathetic and parasympathetic responses, given the observation of specific physiological measures.

o  Participants will be able to explain measures of human wellness and resiliency, in the context of chronobiology and the observation of specific physiological measures.  (differentiate between the physiological effects of stress and sleep).

o  Participants will be able to explain the Circumplex model for affective state.

o  Participants will be able to explain the core relational theme of motivational state.

LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE

Content builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have a background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications. The primary goal of this particular program is to broaden the clinical, consultative, and research knowledge bases of attendees and was deemed intermediate, by the definition above.  For those psychologists using the modality of biofeedback and interested in efficacy, science, and latest clinical applications. This conference presents research relevant to psychological practice, education, and science; (2) it is our intention to host an offering to help psychologists to keep up with the most current scientific evidence regarding assessment, intervention, and education; and (3) we believe that this program would allow psychologists to increase competencies to improve services to patients. This conference is IN NO WAY a substitute for the basic academic education and training needed for entry into the field of psychology.
